Wondering how to find a great vet for you and your pet?
Ask yourself these 7 questions.

When you consider that your vet is an important member of your “pet family,” you’ll want to ask yourself the following questions to find a great fit.

  1. Do I know anyone who uses this veterinary practice? You may want to ask friends, your pet’s day care provider, etc. for recommendations.
  2. What’s the practice like? Schedule an initial visit/interview, bring in your pet, and see what it’s like there. For example, is it clean and easy to get to, with a friendly and professional staff? How do they handle your dog medical questions?
  3. What are their billing policies? Ask about their rates, billing terms, and whether or not they accept pet insurance (if you have it).
  4. Who delivers the primary care to my pet? If it matters to you, you may want a dedicated vet who will get to know your pet. Or you may be OK with seeing a different vet from the practice’s team at each visit.
  5. What are the other staff members like, such as the technicians? Trained technicians often do the initial “intake and vitals” during each visit. Do they seem friendly and caring? That’s a very good sign.
  6. What services do they offer? Basic medicine only, or also medical specialties and services? Do they run tests in-house or do they use an in-house lab? How do they handle emergencies when you need quick help (for example, how do they help you with sudden cat illness symptoms?).
  7. Are dogs and cats separated in the practice’s entrances, exam rooms and recovery kennels?

These are just a few questions you can ask to find the right vet for you. If you have a certain philosophy about pet care, such as alternative medicine, you may have other questions as well. Make a list before you visit the clinic.
